Pet Cardiology (Heart) Services
At Martindale Animal Clinic we recognize that although it is more often diagnosed in older pets, a heart problem can affect your pet at any age.
What is Heart Failure?
Heart failure occurs when the heart no longer has the ability to pump blood around the body effectively. Heart failure can lead to congestive heart failure. If an animal is suffering from congestive heart failure, fluid starts to accumulate in the lungs and/or abdomen.
Animals suffering from congestive heart failure often experience difficulty breathing and, in dogs, frequent coughing as well.
What Causes Heart Failure?
Some causes of heart failure include:
- Congenital heart disease (animals born with a heart problem)
- Valvular heart disease (abnormalities of the valves of the heart)
- Myocardial heart disease (diseased muscle of the heart)
- Heartworm disease
- Arrhythmias (rhythm disturbances)
Can You Treat My Pet’s Heart Condition?
Many heart problems can be identified on physical examination. Additional tests are usually required to accurately identify the cause of the heart disease. Additional tests may include:
- EKGs (electrocardiograms)
- Radiographs (X-rays)
- Ultrasounds
Heart disease is a serious life threatening condition but with early diagnosis and appropriate therapy you can extend your pet’s life. Contact us today to book an appointment.
