The summer ushers warmer weather, blooming plant life and the opportunity for many pet owners to share outdoor time with their animals. Summer is also a time to take precautions and to ensure the safety of family animals because of the potential hazards and conditions during this season. Here is a list of summertime pet care reminders for pet owners of dogs, cats and other family animals;
Visit the veterinarian if your pet needs updated vaccines and an overall check-up. This is a great time to ask about prevention
Ensure that your pet can be identified. Secure identification tags to pet collars and include the pet’s name and your contact information. I.D. tags can be the easiest way for anyone who may find a lost pet to return them home. Micro-chips are another method of identifying your pet.
Avoid leaving pets inside vehicles. Never leave an animal in an unattended car during the summer or any time if you live in an extreme climate. Sadly, the interior of a parked vehicle can rise dramatically in a short period of time during the summer and can be fatal to a dog or other family pet. If a pet must travel in a vehicle with you on a hot day, bring them inside into the air conditioning comfort as well. If you are ever concerned that your dog may be suffering from canine overheating or heat stroke, get them out of the hot sun, cool them down with water and contact your veterinarian immediately to discuss symptoms and further treatment.
Provide plenty of fresh water for your animals. While fresh water is vital for all animals in any season, it is especially important during warmer months and if the animal has been exercising. Bring water with you for both humans and for your animals when you go on walks and hikes. Take care that the pet does not ingest too much water after exercise as this may induce vomiting. Consult your veterinarian as soon as possible if you have any questions or concerns about dehydration or heat related health issues with your pet.
