Everyone wants to care for their pet. Every question is worth a phone call, and we encourage our clients to contact us for advice whenever it’s needed. If something happens to your pet after hours, here are a few signs to watch for that require you to head right to the emergency clinic:

  • ER ClinicAny type of seizures, fainting, or other collapse.
  • All eye injuries, regardless of severity.
  • Persistent diarrhea or vomiting, generally two or three times within an hour.
  • Swelling around the face or hives that indicate an allergic reaction. Look for hives on the belly.

If the pet is suspected of ingesting any type of poison such as antifreeze, rodent or snail bait or human medications. Insecticides are particularly harmful to cats, this includes flea control medication meant for dogs. They are also susceptible to petroleum based products.

  • Suspected snake or venomous spider bites.
  • Either hot or cold thermal stress. Even if the animal has appeared to recover it could be damaged internally.
  • Open wounds and animal bites.
  • Trauma such as a being hit by a car. Even if the pet looks fine there could be internal damage.
  • Chronic coughing, difficulty breathing or a near drowning incident are all signs of possible respiratory problems.
  • Straining to urinate or defecate.

If any of these signs present themselves, contact us immediately. Never hesitate to call your veterinarian if you suspect that something might be wrong with your pet.
