Everyone wants to care for their pet. Not having a plan on how you want to care for your pet can lead you to not giving them your best. These pet wellness tips will help you know what is needed and can give you a hand, or paw, in caring for your pet.
1) Schedule an exam every year. Your pet needs a yearly exam just the same as you do. This can identify symptoms that you may not recognize but will be easily seen by your doctor. Preventative medicine is the best kind there is, taking care of issues right when they manifest is the key to a healthy pet.
2) Make sure your pet has all of their immunizations done. This is a simple pet wellness tip that can be done at your yearly exam. The standard core vaccinations for dogs are rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. Cat vaccines include FVRCP, Feline Leukemia and rabies. Don’t be afraid to ask your vet if there are other vaccines your pet may need.
3) If you have a dog this may sound odd, but brushing your dog’s teeth can help fend off many health issues. Some heart, kidney and joint problems all start right in your dog’s mouth. You’ll be taking care of your dog’s health and bad breath at the same time!
4) Have your pet neutered or spayed. This major health benefit goes beyond the obvious of helping control the pet population. A spayed female dog has a much lower chance of having uterine infections and breast cancer. These are leading causes of death. Neutering your male dogs before 6 months of age lowers their risk of testicular and prostate cancer.
5) Be prepared for emergencies with a pet first aid kit. These kits should include cleaning supplies such as eye and skin washes, gauze, iodine, a first aid cream, antiseptic wipes and green soap. You’ll obviously need several sizes of bandages and sterile pads, cotton swabs, latex gloves for you, and scissors to cut the gauze. Other items can be powdered styptic, hydrocortisone cream and insect sting swabs.
Following these few steps is vital in maintaining, or even improving, your wellness levels of your pet.
