Do you have a cat?

Recently we had a client in to visit us who was telling us all about her cat. This surprised us as we have helped her care for her dog for a number of years and didn’t know she had a cat as well. When we asked why we hadn’t met her kitty, she replied “He is indoors and doesn’t need to see a veterinarian.”

This happens quite often.    There are several reasons why we don’t get the opportunity to meet our client’s cats. Perhaps together we can find ways to improve our relationship with our feline friends so that we can help them more.

Tip one:  We want to know about your feline pets.  Having their information on file helps us with reminders as well as having important information should an emergency arises.

Tip two: Cats are like all illusionists – what you see may not be what you get.  Often by the time even the most astute cat owner realizes something is amiss, an illness has become far more serious and more costly to treat.

Tip three: Cats can get sick too.  Indoor cats are safe from outside threats like cars and wildlife.  They are still susceptible to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, dental disease and hyperthyroid.  Routine exams and wellness screens help diagnosis medical conditions and allow families the information and support to make health care decisions.

Tip four: Our pets age rapidly.  A cat not seeing a veterinarian annually is like us not seeing a doctor every four to six years.

Tip five: Sometimes getting your cat to us is difficult and challenging.  As pet owners we know how stressful this can be.  Some of our own pets don’t like being transported and are very concerned when here.  We work continually to develop new options for cat owners.

For example:

  • We do house calls
  • There are sprays that help relieve the stress of travel
  • We have information on helping carriers become ‘safe’ places
  • We offer a calm setting

Things owners can do to help us:

  • Let us know when you arrive with your cat and we will get you right into an exam room if there are dogs in the lobby
  • Talk to us about products that help relieve stress and anxiety both at home and through the trip
  • Allow us to partner with you to care for your cat
